The primary antimicrobial used with Perio Tray™ delivery is  Perio Gel™ with 1.7% hydrogen peroxide. It is an excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiviral agent with a long history of safe usage in dentistry.

Hydrogen peroxide is bio-compatible; no one is allergic to it. Humans make hydrogen peroxide in our liver. There is hydrogen peroxide in your mouth with every exhale and peroxide is in human breast milk and white blood cells.

Studies show that peroxide needs time to act against biofilm. The Perio Tray™ will delivery the peroxide deep and hold it there long enough to work. 10 minutes is the minimum application time and 15 minutes is ideal. At 15 minutes, you get a good kill rate and all of the oxygenating benefits. If patients wear the trays and gel longer than 15 minutes, it doesn't help or hurt them. It's just convenient.

In addition to healthier gums, patients will notice fresher breath and whiter teeth!

Make Sure Patients Have Enough

The number one reason for incomplete tissue response with Perio Protect is that patients run out of gel.

Success depends on regular usage. Be sure to dispense enough gel and to check that they are getting proper refills. Daily usage recommendations will help you determine how much gel patients will use:

  • Perio Tray @ 1x/day, a tube will last approximately 6 weeks
  • Perio Tray @ 2x/day, a tube will last approximately 3 weeks
  • Perio Tray @ 3x/day, a tube will last approximately 2 weeks.

We recommend that you include 3 tubes of Perio Gel™ when you deliver your Perio Protect case. Patients will typically need 8 tubes of Perio Gel™ per year or two tubes of Perio Gel™ every 3 months..

**Hint: to get the most gel out of a tube, use the Perio Protect tube squeeze. Ask your account rep to set your patients up for success with this little but powerful squeezer.

Caution When Using Hydrogen Peroxide Gels

Please take note that the Perio-Care gel advertised as an alternative to Perio Gel™ oral debriding agent/oral wound cleaner contains 2 chemicals that may cause redness, burning, itching, or swelling as contact dermatitis: Diazolidinyl Urea and DMDM Hydantoin. The chemicals are added to cosmetics and various personal care products in order to prevent spoilage and fend off yeast, bacteria, and molds. The preservatives act as formaldehyde-releasing agents. We are unaware of the chemicals being used in other oral care products.

There are no published studies on in vivo usage of Perio-Care gel with this preservative. Additional information is available from Pfuhler S, Wolf HU. Effects of the formaldehyde releasing preservatives dimethylol urea and diazolidinyl urea in several short-term genotoxicity tests.
